Tag Management
Overview - Tags
The Tag management feature in DataChain is accessible from the GenericsData module.
From the GenericsData Left Menu, select the menu, then the Tags submenu.
Tags contribute to the governance of DataChain elements. They are used to characterize elements and make them easier to identify, search, and filter.
DataChain distinguishes between two uses of tags:
-
Tags associated with the metadata of DataChain elements;
-
Domain Tags, dedicated to organizing Projects.
These two types of tags are independent.
Elementary Tags
Tags associated with metadata are used to characterize all DataChain elements.
Several Tags can be assigned to the metadata of each DataChain element.
A Tag consists of a label and a color.
Project Domain Tags
Domain Tags are used to organize Projects according to functional or thematic groupings specific to the organization.
They are exclusively associated with Projects and are independent of the Tags used in metadata.
In particular, it is possible to:
-
assign one or more Domain Tags to a Project;
-
filter the list of Projects according to one or more Domain Tags;
-
display Projects in a folder-organized view, with each folder corresponding to a Domain Tag.
The creation of Domain Tags is restricted to users with the Data governance lead role assigned from the DC-CONSOLE module. The user who has newly received this role must log out and log back in for it to be effectively applied in DataChain Core.
Domain Tags can be assigned to or removed from a Project by users who are managers of that Project.
The same Domain Tag cannot be assigned more than once to the same Project.
Elementary Tag Management
Creating a Tag
There are two ways to create Tags associated with metadata:
-
Either through the Tag management feature;
-
Or while describing the metadata of each DataChain element.
Creation through the Tag Management feature
-
Access the GenericsData module.
-
Select Menu
-
Select the Tags Menu
The
button is used to create a Tag.
List of existing Tags.
Used to edit the Tag in order to modify its label or color.
Used to delete a Tag.
To create a Tag:
-
Click the
button.

-
Specify a label and a color for the Tag.
-
Then
Creation via the metadata panel of DataChain elements
Each DataChain element is associated with metadata.
In the metadata pane, an area is reserved for Tags. The user can select existing Tags using autocomplete or enter a new label and press the Enter key.
If the user has permission to create Tags, the new Tag is added to the Tag repository.
The Tag is then available in the metadata list of the DataChain instance.
Editing a Tag
-
GenericsData module
. Menu then Tags Menu.
Once the list of Tags is displayed, search for the Tag in the table. Use the search feature located:
-
Either in the column header;
-
Or through the global search feature located at the top right of the table.
-
Click the Tag label or the
icon at the end of the row.
Make the desired changes, then
Domain Tag Management
Domain Tags have a management page separate from the one used for Tags associated with metadata.
The creation of Domain Tags at the organization level is restricted to the Data governance lead.
Creating a Domain Tag
To create a Domain Tag (with the Data governance lead role):
-
Access the Domain Tag management feature from the "Miscellaneous" section of the left sidebar in DataChain Core;
-
Click the + button to create a new Domain Tag
-
Enter a label and a color;
-
Save.
The new Domain Tag then becomes available to be assigned to Projects by their managers.
Assigning Domain Tags to a Project
Domain Tags are assigned directly from the Project administration page.
The Project metadata editing area allows the Project manager to view and manage them.
To assign a Domain Tag (available to Project managers):
-
Access the Project administration;
-
Click the drop-down list associated with the Domain label;
-
Select the Domain Tag to assign;
-
Click the Project Save button;
Several Domain Tags can be associated with the same Project.
The same Domain Tag cannot be added more than once to the same Project.
Modifying a Domain Tag
From the list of Domain Tags, by a Data governance lead
(Sidebar > Miscellaneous > Domain Tags):
-
Search for the relevant Domain Tag;
-
Click the edit button at the end of the row;
-
Make the desired change;
-
Save.
Deleting a Domain Tag
From the list of Domain Tags, by a Data governance lead
(Sidebar > Miscellaneous > Domain Tags):
-
Search for the relevant Domain Tag and select it using the corresponding checkbox;
-
Click the delete button in the header;
-
Confirm the deletion.
| Deleting a Domain Tag from the list permanently removes it from the instance and from all its associated projects. |
From a project metadata panel (by the project manager):
-
Search for the relevant Domain Tag;
-
Click the delete button at the end of the tag;
-
Click the Project Save button;
| This operation only modifies the assignment of the Tag to the Project. It does not delete the Domain Tag from the organization repository. |
Filtering Projects by Domain Tags
The page displaying the list of Projects includes a filter that allows one or more Domain Tags to be selected.
This filter is available in the different views of the Project list.
To filter Projects:
-
Click the + tag button in the Domain Tags section;
-
Select one or more Tags;
-
The list of Projects is updated according to the selected Tags.
The selected filters are saved for the user in order to preserve their preferences the next time they view the page.
Global search across Project metadata remains available and is not affected by the use of Domain Tags.
Displaying Projects by Domain
The list of Projects provides a view for visually organizing Projects into Domains corresponding to Domain Tags.
This view complements the standard Project list view.
Each Domain Tag corresponds to a Domain containing the Projects to which that Tag is assigned.
When a Project has several Domain Tags, it appears in each of the Domains corresponding to the Tags assigned to it.
Projects that do not have any Domain Tags are accessible from the Not classified Domain.
The Domain Tag filter remains available in this view to reduce the list of displayed Domains and Projects.
Switching from the List view to the By Domain view does not change the Domain Tag filter.
The selected view is saved on the user’s computer.
Using Tags
Elementary Tags are used as part of data governance.
They are used to add one or more characteristics to a DataChain element.
Tags associated with metadata can also be used to filter all or some DataChain elements.
Example: in element lists, the Tags column contains an area in the header that can be used to filter by one or more Tags.
The Tag filtering features in the Graph view can be used to display a targeted view centered on the specified Tags.
Domain Tags address a different need: they make it possible to organize and filter Projects specifically without modifying the Tags associated with their metadata.
